Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai held it's Annual Summer Kyu Grade Examinations at the Aikido Centre, Mill Lane, Barnstaple, Devon has shown. Twenty one members attempted examinations from 10th Kyu - 1st Kyu.
The results were as follows:
Promoted to 10th Kyu: Sophia Plows & Eric Coughlan-Herbert. Promoted to 9th Kyu: Stuart Taylor, Clive Jones & Horatio Marett.
Promoted to 8th Kyu: Oliver Turner & Ramon Marett.
Promoted to 7th Kyu: Valentina C.Fernandas & Lilly Hawkins. Promoted to 6th Kyu: Gregory Turner & Adan Fernandas Da Silva.
Promoted to 5th Kyu: Ryan Lines & Helen Jude.
Promoted to 4th Kyu: Harper Bond, Alexander Perry & Claire Kilpatrick.
Promoted to 3rd Kyu: Luke Constable, Leonie Byrne McColl, Thomas Hawkins & Lee Galley.
Many thanks and much gratitude goes to the following senior members who gave up their day to assist and help those taking part: Daniel Bevan 4th Dan, Gary Moore 4th Dan, Russell Ovey 4th Dan, Craig Hill 4th Dan, Chris Grundy 3rd Dan, Mark Vallei 3rd Dan & Gillian Mackenzie 3rd Dan.
NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL EVENTS
The Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy International Winter Course brought together over 250 people from all over Europe. Training was lead by H.Otsuka San-Dai Soke who had travelled from Japan especially for the occasion. It was both pleasing and humbling to see so many from Devon attending throughout the course. On the last day a Dan Grading was held with a panel hand picked by Shiomitsu Sensei that included the Grandmaster. Attempting the examination was one person from France, two from Germany and eight from England (on this occasion, all from Devon). Out of the eleven who attempted the examination, seven passed including six from Devon. Russell Ovey and Craig Hill both passed 4th Dan. Russell in his mid 40's and Craig in his mid 30's have both trained since they were 6 and 4 years old respectively. Two members over the age of sixty passed 2nd Dan, Chris Stamp at 68 years old and Susan Greenaway at the age of 61, a truly wonderful achievement. Edmund Denning also successfully passed 2nd Dan at the age of 59, as did Sabella McPake at the age of 21. On behalf of everyone concerned with Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai our heartfelt congratulations go to those who passed and our thoughts with those who on this occasion did not, but tried so hard.
