Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai was established in 1984 by the late Sensei Toru Takamizawa 7th Dan Kyoshi Shihan and his personal student Peter Hill 6th Dan. Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai are full and founder members of the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy and are reconized by it's chief instructor Sensei M.Shiomitsu 9th Dan Hanshi Shihan as an independant association within the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy. Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai are also through the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy members of the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Renmei, Japan.
The main objectives of the Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai are to promote authentic Wado-Ryu Karate-Do, to practise safe, traditional Karate-Do to the highest possible standard and to educate people into the true values and benefits of practising authentic, traditional Budo. Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai is above all dedicated to the memory and wishes of it's founder, the late Sensei Toru Takamizawa 7th Dan Kyoshi Shihan (pictured left with the Grandmaster of Wado-Ryu Karate-Do H.Ohtsuka II 10th Dan Saiko Shihan and Peter Hill 6th Dan at Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai's old Hombu dojo, Bideford, North Devon 1996).
Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai's chief instructor is the world renowed Sensei M.Shiomitsu 9th Dan Hanshi Shihan (pictured right with Peter Hill at the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy Summer Course, Bideford, North Devon 2002), who is the chief instructor for authentic Wado-Ryu Karate-Do in Europe as reconized by the Ohtsuka Soke (founding family). Shiomitsu Sensei visits Devon five times a year including for a week at the end of July each year for the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy's annual summer camp. This helps Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai to maintain and continue to improve on the standard and spirit that was created by Shiomitsu Sensei's friend and our founder the late Sensei Toru Takamizawa Kyoshi Shihan 7th Dan. Kyu grading examinations are held four times a year within Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai and are conducted by our senior instructor Peter Hill 6th Dan. Technical examinations for 1st - 4th Dan are taken on the annual Wado Ryu Karate-Do Academy Summer (held in Bideford, Devon) or Winter Course (held in Guildford, Surrey) with Shiomitsu Sensei and the grading panel of the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy. This structure and tradition that we have within our group regarding grading examinations helps us to maintain and to continue to improve on the standards that we are well known and respected for.
For younger members who wish to enjoy and experience the sporting aspects of Karate, there are regular squad training sessions at both local and national level. Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai have had an incredible amount of success at local, regional and national level. Members have also competed with great success and distinction in both Europe and Japan at international level.
