Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai was established in 1984 by the late Sensei Toru Takamizawa 7th Dan Kyoshi Shihan and his personal student Sensei Peter Hill 6th Dan. Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai are full and founder members of the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy (link) and are reconized by it's chief instructor Sensei M.Shiomitsu 9th Dan Hanshi Shihan as an independant association in it's own right within the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy. Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai are also through the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy, members of the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Renmei, Japan (link), the English Karate Federation (link) and the World Karate Federation (link).

The main objectives of the Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai are to practise and study authentic Wado-Ryu Karate-Do to the highest possible standard in the most honourable and correct way. Also, to educate the general public into the benefits of practising the martial arts in a deep and correct manner according to the traditions of Japanese Budo. Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai is above all dedicated to the memory and wishes of it's founder, the late Sensei Toru Takamizawa 7th Dan Kyoshi Shihan (pictured left in 1996 with his teacher, the Grandmaster of Wado-Ryu Karate-Do H.Ohtsuka II 10th Dan Saiko Shihan and his student Peter Hill 6th Dan at Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai's old Hombu dojo, the "Ken Shu Kan", Rope Walk, Bideford, North Devon).

Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai's chief instructor is the world renowed Sensei M.Shiomitsu 9th Dan Hanshi Shihan (pictured right with Peter Hill 6th Dan at the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy Summer Course, Bideford, North Devon in 2002). Sensei M.Shiomitsu is the chief instructor for authentic Wado-Ryu Karate-Do in Europe as reconized by the Ohtsuka Soke (founding family). Sensei M.Shiomitsu visits our group here in Devon at least three times a year. This helps Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai to maintain and continue to improve on the standard and spirit that was created by Sensei Shiomitsu's friend and our founder the late Sensei Toru Takamizawa. Kyu grading examinations are held four times a year within Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai and are conducted by our senior instructor Sensei Peter Hill 6th Dan. Technical examinations for 1st - 4th Dan are taken either on the annual Wado Ryu Karate-Do Academy Summer Course (held at the Lymington Health & Leisure Centre, Hampshire) or on the Winter Course (held at the Spectrum Centre in Guildford, Surrey) with Sensei M.Shiomitsu and the grading panel of the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy. Every other year on the Winter Course the panel is headed by the Grandmaster of Wado-Ryu Karate-Do H.Ohtsuka II 10th Dan Saiko Shihan. This is when members of our own group attempt 2nd Dan and above. This structure and tradition that we have within our group regarding grading examinations helps us to maintain and to continue to improve on the standards that we are well known and respected for.

For younger members who wish to enjoy and experience the sporting aspect of Karate, there are regular squad training sessions at both local and national level. Devon Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Kai have had an incredible amount of success at local, regional and national level, both within Wado-Ryu and in Open All-Style tournaments. Members have also competed with great success and distinction all over Europe and in Japan at international level.
